Aspiring Makeup Artist? These 6 Essentials Will Help You Get Started

Like a baby learning how to walk for the first time, being a newbie in the world of beauty cosmetics is definitely overwhelming. There are so many choices in the market that it can be tough to figure out exactly where to start. Of course, you don’t want to waste money on unnecessary items that you will never use.

Putting together your personal makeup bag doesn’t have to be difficult. Don’t worry, I’ve got your back! I’ve created a checklist as a guide and you will have everything you need to get started.

Here are your must-have makeup essentials:

    Foundation (Cream Or Powder)

A basic makeup essential everyone thinks of first is a foundation as it evens out skin tone and gives a flawless complexion. If you are aiming for a light amount of coverage, go for a powder that conceals but stills feel light on the skin; otherwise, go for a liquid or cream foundation if you're aiming for a high amount of coverage.

    Concealer

Concealer is extremely important especially for moms who barely sleep. It is used to awaken the under eyes and delete any skin blemishes. Its usage varies depending on what look you want to achieve. It can be used as a corrector for dark spots (great for those sleepless nights) or for highlighting and contouring.

    Brow Pencil

KILAY IS LIFE! Therefore, your brows should never be neglected when doing makeup. Perfectly filled-in brows really complete a look and pull everything together. You may opt for the traditional brow pencil or use new alternatives, such as the gel type or powder ones. Personally, I enjoy using a brow gel from BYS as its easy to apply and it lasts really long. Make sure you trim and remove any excess hairs before filling in your brows.

Tip: Seek professional assistance when trimming your brows; not only will this save you from any cuts but also, it will help you achieve the shape that's perfect for your face.

    Blush And Highlighter

Add healthy colour and a subtle glow to your skin with a classic blush and highlighter. Using a compact that has both a blush and a bronzer is helpful when you want to keep your makeup kit minimal and easy for everyday use.

    Eyeliner And Mascara

For a newbie, I recommend you start with a pencil liner and as you become more advanced with, you can move on to a gel or liquid liner. Add in a mascara as it has the ability to make you look and feel more awake with just one application.

    Eyeshadow Palette

No beauty kit is complete without a few essential eyeshadows. Many brands make eyeshadow palettes that come in multiple colors – from “night time” palette (for when you want to create a more smoke-ish look) and a more neutral, “every day” palette.

    A Good Set Of Brushes

I remember someone said that no matter how cheap your makeup is, a good brush can make it look expensive. Therefore, this is 100% necessary to any makeup kit. You should have several different brushes: a large blush/bronzer brush, a kabuki for liquid or cream foundation, a few eyeshadow brushes for lid color and blending a small, thin brush that can be used for applying eyeliner, and a concealer brush which can be used for cream shadows too.

    Lipstick (or lip gloss)

Lipstick or gloss -- or lip tint, for me -- is an important makeup essential. I would suggest having a few lipstick and gloss options to choose from based on your level of comfort. Include at least one lipstick shade that is different from what you usually wear – red is a good start.
